Does a Hong Kong eSIM Work in Macau?
Not necessarily. Hong Kong and Macau are about an hour apart by ferry, but they are separate Special Administrative Regions, and each has its own mobile operators. A plan listed as "Hong Kong" coverage is built for Hong Kong networks, and it may not connect at all in Macau.
Before you buy, check the coverage line on the plan page. For this trip, there are three coverage options worth comparing:
- Hong Kong only: fine if Macau is not on your itinerary.

Entry Rules: Check Your Passport First
Hong Kong and Macau each set their own visa rules, and those rules depend on your nationality. The Hong Kong Immigration Department publishes a country-by-country table of visa-free periods. Macau's list of visa-exempt nationalities and stay limits is on the Macao SAR Government Portal.
As an example, Indonesian passport holders can visit Hong Kong visa-free for up to 30 days, and they can stay in Macau for up to 30 days without a visa (checked 25 September 2026). Other passports have different limits, so look up your own nationality on both official pages before you travel.
Your passport is checked again every time you cross between the two cities. Keep it in your day bag rather than leaving it in the hotel safe.
Combined Plan or Two Separate Plans?

Getting from Hong Kong to Macau
There are two main routes, and both involve immigration checks on each side.
High-speed ferry
According to GovHK, Macau ferries leave from the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal at Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan (Hong Kong Island) and from the China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon).
Bus across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge
Cross-boundary shuttle buses run 24 hours a day from the bridge's Hong Kong Port to Macau. The official HZMB site lists fares of HK$65 from 06:00 to 23:59 and HK$70 from 00:00 to 05:59. This route is handy if you're staying near the airport or Tung Chung.
Connectivity tip: turn on data roaming for your eSIM line before you cross, so your phone connects as soon as you walk out of the terminal in Macau.
Money in Macau
Macau's official currency is the pataca (MOP), which is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar. The Macao Government Tourism Office notes that many merchants in tourist areas also accept Hong Kong dollars. Keep a little pataca or a cashless option for places outside the tourist zones. It doesn't work the other way round: the pataca is not legal tender in Hong Kong.
