Morocco eSIM for Tourists: Data, Sahara Signal and Setup Guide Image

This guide explains how much data a typical Morocco trip uses, what to expect from mobile signal in the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara, and when a Morocco-only plan beats a regional one.

Why use an eSIM in Morocco?

Visitors usually choose between three options: roaming with their home carrier, a physical SIM card bought after arrival, or a travel eSIM. For short trips, an eSIM tends to be the least hassle.

  • Set up before departure. Scan the QR code at home, then enable data roaming on the eSIM line after landing.
  • Keep your home number. Your physical SIM stays in the phone, so you can still receive bank and app verification texts, provided your home carrier allows roaming.
  • No airport queue. After a long flight you can book a ride, message your riad or call family right away.
  • Predictable cost. You choose data and validity up front instead of risking a roaming bill.

First, confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. The quickest way is the Corelinx eSIM compatibility checker. If you plan to keep two lines active, our dual SIM setup guide explains which line to use for data and which for calls.

How much data do you need in Morocco?

Most of your data goes to navigation, messaging, social media and the occasional video call. The medinas of Marrakech and Fes are mazes of narrow lanes, so expect to open your map often. Rough estimates per person:

Travel styleDaily useSuggested for 7 days
Light: maps and text messaging200–400 MB3 GB
Typical: maps, social media, photo uploads500 MB–1 GB5 GB or unlimited 500 MB/day
Heavy: video calls, video uploads, hotspot1.5–3 GB10 GB or unlimited 1–2 GB/day

These are estimates. Download offline maps and entertainment on hotel Wi-Fi to stretch your data further.

Is there signal in the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains?

In big cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fes and Tangier, mobile data is usually easy to find. The gaps appear on long overland routes, especially the drive from Marrakech over the Atlas Mountains to the desert around Merzouga or Zagora.

  • Mountain roads and remote valleys: expect short stretches with no signal, as in hilly regions anywhere.
  • Desert camps: conditions vary by camp. Some get signal in certain spots and some barely do, so don't rely on the internet for anything critical overnight in the dunes.
  • Prepare: download offline maps, screenshot tickets and bookings, and update family before heading into the desert.

How to install and activate your Morocco eSIM

  1. Buy a plan on the Morocco plans page and open the email with your QR code.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM manager (Samsung).
  3. Label it "Morocco" and leave it switched off for data while you are still at home.
  4. After landing, select the Morocco eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
  5. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid carrier roaming charges.

Useful apps for Morocco

  • ONCF Voyages: the official app of Morocco's national rail operator. It sells train tickets, including for the Al Boraq high-speed service, and stores e-tickets on your phone, with Arabic, French and English interfaces. The official website is oncf-voyages.ma. Keep a screenshot of your ticket as a backup.
  • Offline maps: invaluable in crowded medinas and on road trips.
  • A translation app: Arabic and French are the most widely used languages, so download both for offline use.
  • WhatsApp: the usual way to reach riads, guides and tour drivers.

One plan for Morocco plus Spain, Egypt or Turkey?

Morocco often shares an itinerary with southern Spain, or with Egypt, Turkey and the Gulf. Check coverage before you buy:

  • Corelinx Europe plans do not include Morocco. For a Spain–Morocco trip, buy a Spain plan and a Morocco plan. Most eSIM phones can store several eSIM profiles at once.
  • The MENA regional plan covers Morocco plus Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. It's handy for multi-country trips, although a Morocco-only plan is usually cheaper if you only visit Morocco.

Before you go: quick checklist

  • Check entry requirements for your passport with Morocco's embassy or consulate in your country. Visa rules differ by nationality and can change.
  • Make sure your passport validity is sufficient, and keep digital copies.
  • Carry some Moroccan dirham (MAD) in cash for souks, petit taxis and tips, since not every vendor accepts cards.
  • Install the eSIM before departure and confirm the profile appears in your settings.
  • Download offline maps for Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen and your desert route.

Morocco eSIM FAQ

Can I make WhatsApp calls with a Morocco eSIM?

Corelinx Morocco plans are data plans, so you call through apps such as WhatsApp. Call quality depends on local signal strength. In the main cities, voice and video calls usually work well.

Does a Morocco eSIM come with a local phone number?

Data plans aren't designed for regular calls or local SMS. Your home SIM can still receive texts if roaming is enabled with your carrier. Check each plan's details before buying.

When does the validity period start?

The activation rule is listed on each plan's page, so read it before you buy. The safest approach is to install the eSIM a few days before your trip but not use it for data until you arrive in Morocco.

How much data do I need for 10 days in Morocco?

For typical use (maps, social media, photos), 5–10 GB is usually enough. If you video call often or share a hotspot, choose an unlimited plan with a daily allowance of 1 GB or more.

Is there mobile signal in the Sahara?

Signal is usually available around desert gateway towns like Merzouga and Zagora, but it can't be guaranteed inside the camps. Download offline maps and update family before you head into the dunes.
