Why use an eSIM in Nepal?
The moment you clear arrivals in Kathmandu, you will probably want data: to book a ride to Thamel, pull up your hotel confirmation, message home, or reach your trekking agency. An eSIM covers all of that without a SIM-card queue at the airport and without removing your home SIM.
- Keep your home number. Your physical SIM stays in the phone for bank one-time codes, while the eSIM handles mobile data.
- Set it up at home. Scan the QR code before departure, then switch on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land.
- Know your costs up front. The plan price is fixed, unlike home-carrier roaming that can run up quickly if you forget to turn it off.

How much data do you need in Nepal?
Your route matters more than your trip length. In Kathmandu and Pokhara you will lean on maps, ride apps and social media. On trekking trails, usage usually drops because signal comes and goes and you will be saving battery.
| Trip style | Typical length | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan | 3–5 days | 1GB–3GB, or 500MB/day unlimited if you post a lot |
| Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan or Lumbini | 7–10 days | 5GB–10GB for 30 days, or 1GB/day unlimited for 7–10 days |
| Annapurna or Everest region trek | 2–3 weeks | 5GB–10GB for 30 days; fixed data suits days without coverage |
| Content creators and remote workers | Flexible | 20GB for 30 days or an unlimited plan |
For treks the reasoning is simple. Daily allowances are lost on days you have no signal, while a 30-day fixed-data plan keeps your unused data for when you are back in town.
Is there mobile signal on Himalayan trekking routes?
No eSIM, local SIM or roaming plan can promise coverage along every trail in Nepal. Mobile data is generally dependable in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The higher and more remote you go, the more often the signal drops, especially in narrow valleys, near high passes and in bad weather.
How to stay reachable on a trek
- Download offline maps of your route before leaving Kathmandu or Pokhara.
- Share your itinerary with family, including the days you expect to be offline.
- Batch your updates whenever you reach a village or lodge with signal.
- Carry a power bank. Searching for signal drains batteries faster in the cold.
- Keep offline copies of your passport, visa, permits and agency contacts.
Some teahouses offer Wi-Fi, sometimes for a fee. Treat it as a backup rather than your main connection.
How do you install a Nepal eSIM?
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Our guide to using a travel eSIM alongside your primary SIM explains the dual-SIM settings.
- Choose a plan on the Nepal eSIM page and complete checkout.
- Scan the QR code from your email while you are still on home Wi-Fi.
- Label the line (for example "Nepal") and leave it switched off until you travel if the plan's validity starts when it connects.
- After landing, set the eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for that line only.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so you are not charged roaming fees.
What should you sort out before flying to Nepal?
Tourist visa
Nepal's Department of Immigration (checked 11 October 2026) lists tourist visas, available on arrival or from Nepali missions abroad, at US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days. Extensions cost US$3 per day (15-day minimum), up to 150 days in total per visa year (January to December). Online applications go through the Nepali Port portal, and the official table is on the Department of Immigration visa fees page. Some nationalities have different arrangements: US citizens can apply for a separate reciprocity visa, and some neighbouring countries have their own rules. Check the current rules for your passport before you go.
Trekking permits
Most popular trekking routes pass through national parks or conservation areas that require permits, and restricted areas need special permits arranged through a registered agency. Rules on permits and mandatory guides have changed before, so confirm the latest requirements with Nepal's tourism authorities or a licensed trekking agency before booking.
Time zone and cash
Nepal runs on UTC+5:45. Bring small US dollar notes for the visa fee on arrival, and carry Nepali rupees for spending on trails where cards may not be accepted.
How do Nepal eSIM prices compare with other countries?
To compare what travel data costs per gigabyte across 40 popular destinations, see our Traveller Internet Cost Index for October 2026. If you are combining Nepal with India, buy a separate India eSIM, because a Nepal plan works only in Nepal.
Nepal eSIM FAQ
Can I use WhatsApp and make calls with a Nepal eSIM?
The Corelinx Nepal eSIM is a data plan, so WhatsApp messages and voice or video calls over the internet work wherever you have signal. Keep your home SIM active for bank text messages.
Is there signal at Everest Base Camp?
No provider can guarantee coverage at high altitude, and signal often drops in bad weather. Expect some days offline and carry offline maps.
Is an eSIM better than buying a SIM at Kathmandu airport?
An eSIM is ready the moment you land, with no queue and no need to remove your home SIM. A local SIM can make sense for long stays if you are comfortable registering it in Nepal.
Which plan is best for a two-week trek?
A 5GB–10GB plan valid for 30 days is usually the most efficient, because days without coverage do not use up a daily allowance. Choose 20GB if you upload a lot of video.
How much is the Nepal tourist visa?
The Department of Immigration lists US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days. Fees can change, so check the official site before you travel.
