Do You Need a Visa for Uzbekistan?
It depends on your passport. Uzbekistan runs a visa-free regime for a long list of countries, usually for 30 days from the date of entry (60 days for some nationalities). The Embassy of Uzbekistan in Malaysia publishes the list. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are on it, for example. Guest Registration: The Rule Most Visitors Miss
Foreigners in Uzbekistan must be registered with the local authorities. According to the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent:
- Hotel guests are registered automatically by the hotel.
- Anyone staying in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation must register, and this can be done online at emehmon.uz with the host's help.
- Stays of up to 3 days don't require registration. Beyond that, unregistered foreigners can be fined.
If you're using apartments or homestays, having working mobile data from day one makes the registration, and the back-and-forth with your host, much easier.
eSIM vs. Buying a Local SIM
You can buy a local SIM after arrival, but it usually means a queue, showing your passport and filling in details at a counter. An eSIM is installed at home and activated on landing. Your home SIM stays in the phone for bank text messages while data runs through the eSIM, and you know the price and data allowance before you leave.

How Much Data for a Silk Road Trip?
The classic TashkentâSamarkandâBukhara route usually takes 7 to 10 days.
- Guided tour (group chat, occasional photo uploads, light map use): about 3 GB for a week.
- Independent travel (maps all day, booking trains and rides, social posts): 5 GB or more.
- Frequent video calls or sharing a hotspot: 10 GB or an Unlimited plan.

Trains Between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara
Most visitors move between the main cities on the Afrosiyob high-speed train. Official tickets are sold on the Uzbekistan Railways website, so book once your dates are fixed and keep the e-ticket on your phone.
Coverage is generally fine in the main tourist cities, but it can drop on overland stretches through open country and desert. Download offline maps for each city before you set off, and screenshot your hotel addresses.
Visiting the Imam al-Bukhari Complex
Many Muslim travellers include a visit to the tomb of Imam al-Bukhari, compiler of the Sahih al-Bukhari hadith collection. The official Uzbekistan tourism site places the memorial complex in the village of Khartang, about 25 km from Samarkand. Because it's outside the city, you'll want data to arrange transport both ways and share your location with your group.
Money
The local currency is the som (UZS). Carry some cash for bazaars and small vendors, and keep a currency-converter app handy for bargaining in Samarkand and Bukhara. It needs mobile data to pull current exchange rates.
Before-You-Go Checklist
- Documents on your phone and on paper: passport copy, hotel bookings and flight e-tickets. If your battery dies or signal drops, the printouts still work.
- A translation app with offline language packs: Uzbek and Russian are widely used day to day, and English isn't always understood at markets or by drivers. Download the packs while you're still at home.
- Offline maps for Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara, with your hotels, the train stations and any day-trip sights saved.
- A power bank: a full day of maps and photos in the old cities drains batteries quickly.
