Best Apps for Türkiye Travel: BiTaksi, İstanbulkart and IMEI Rules

The best apps for a trip to Türkiye cover five jobs: a taxi app (BiTaksi), Istanbul transit apps (İstanbulkart Mobil and Metro İstanbul), a map with offline areas, a translator with Turkish downloaded, and a chat app for hotels and guides. None of them needs a Turkish phone number. They need a working data connection from the moment you land.

This guide explains what each app actually does, what to set up at home, how heavy each one is on data, and the IMEI registration rule that worries a lot of visitors. If you still need to sort out mobile data first, start with our Turkey eSIM setup guide.

Which apps should you install before flying to Türkiye?

Install everything on home Wi-Fi and open each app once so logins and updates are done before departure.

What is the best taxi app in Istanbul?

BiTaksi is a widely used taxi-hailing app in Istanbul and operates in several other Turkish cities. Its App Store listing says it shows an estimated fare before the ride starts and supports online payment; the company's own site also mentions cash payment.

  • Verify before you fly. Account verification usually arrives by SMS, so do it at home while your regular SIM is active.
  • Carry some lira. User reviews mention drivers asking for cash even when card payment was selected. A small cash reserve avoids arguments, and the in-app trip record helps if you need to complain.
  • Pick an obvious pickup point. In busy areas such as Sultanahmet or Taksim, a hotel entrance or tram stop is easier for drivers to find than a pin in a crowded street.

Can you pay for Istanbul public transport with your phone?

Partly. İstanbulkart Mobil, the official city transit app from BELBİM, lets you pay for all public transport with a QR code, top up an İstanbulkart with Turkish lira and load passes, according to its App Store description. Some account features, however, rely on identity checks built around local residents.

The low-risk approach for visitors:

  1. Buy a physical İstanbulkart from a machine or kiosk on arrival and load it.
  2. Install İstanbulkart Mobil to check your balance and find top-up points.
  3. Try the QR or in-app top-up features; if verification fails, the physical card still works.

Add the official Metro İstanbul app for line maps and service information. With a card and these two apps, you can cover most of the city without taxis.

Which maps and translators work offline?

Google Maps or Apple Maps handle walking, restaurant searches and transit directions well in Istanbul. In Google Maps, download Istanbul (and Cappadocia if you are touring there) as an offline area so you are not stranded when the signal drops inside a covered bazaar or a valley. Transit directions still need data.

Google Translate earns its place because English is not universal in small shops, local restaurants or taxis. Download the Turkish language pack for offline text translation and use the camera mode on menus and signs. Conversation mode works best online.

Do you need a Turkish phone number?

Not for a normal holiday. These apps run on data, and any account that needs SMS verification is best set up with your home number before you travel. If you add a data-only eSIM and keep your physical SIM switched on, you can still receive bank one-time codes on your usual number. Our dual SIM guide shows how to set the data line and the SMS line separately.

Will Türkiye block a tourist's phone over IMEI registration?

Türkiye's telecom regulator, BTK, states in an official press release that devices with an IMEI brought in from abroad must be registered within 120 days of the owner's entry into the country. Devices not registered within that window are disconnected from the network. Registration is done through the e-Devlet portal (turkiye.gov.tr) and involves a fee.

For a typical holiday well under 120 days, this does not apply. It matters for students, workers and long-stay residents. If you ever need your IMEI, dial *#06#. Because the fee changes over time, check the current amount on e-Devlet rather than relying on figures quoted in blogs.

How much data do these apps use?

  • Light: WhatsApp messages, booking a taxi, checking your transit balance, offline maps.
  • Moderate: live navigation all day, voice translation, social feeds.
  • Heavy: video calls, uploading balloon or Bosphorus videos, streaming and hotspotting other devices.

Use the Corelinx data calculator to estimate a total for your trip length and habits. Frequent uploaders usually do better with a daily-allowance plan than with a small fixed bundle.

A 30-minute pre-departure checklist

  1. Install BiTaksi, İstanbulkart Mobil, Metro İstanbul, Google Maps and Google Translate.
  2. Create and verify your BiTaksi account with your home number.
  3. Download offline maps for Istanbul (and Cappadocia) plus the Turkish language pack.
  4. Save your hotel address in Turkish as a note or screenshot.
  5. Save the emergency number 112 and your embassy or consulate contacts.
  6. Check entry rules for your passport on the official Türkiye e-Visa portal; requirements differ by nationality, so avoid third-party visa sites.
  7. Install your eSIM before you leave and switch its data line on after landing.

FAQ: apps for travelling in Türkiye

Is Google Maps reliable in Istanbul?

For walking, finding places and public transport routes, it is dependable in Istanbul. Pair it with the Metro İstanbul app for service information and keep an offline area as backup.

Can I use BiTaksi without a Turkish SIM?

Yes, as long as you register and verify the account before departure with a number that can receive SMS. After that, the app runs over your eSIM data connection.

Do tourists need to register their phone's IMEI in Türkiye?

According to BTK, registration is required within 120 days of entry. Short holidays do not reach that limit, so registration is generally not needed.

Can I top up an İstanbulkart in the app?

İstanbulkart Mobil supports top-ups and QR payments, but some features require account verification. Carry a physical card so a failed verification never stops your trip.

What kind of eSIM plan suits a Türkiye trip?

For 7 to 15 days with plenty of navigation and uploads, a daily-allowance plan with 1 GB or 2 GB per day gives more headroom. For light use, a fixed bundle valid for 30 days can cost less.

Stay connected in Türkiye

Every app on this list works best when your data is live the moment you step off the plane.
