Vietnam Travel Apps: Rides, Tickets, Maps and eSIM Setup

For a Vietnam trip, start with four apps: Grab for local rides, Vexere for comparing intercity transport, Google Maps for saved places, and Google Translate for language help. Set them up before departure. A travel eSIM can provide mobile data, but it does not automatically give you a Vietnamese phone number, receive verification texts, or make your payment card eligible for an app.

This Vietnam travel apps checklist follows the practical handoffs on a Hanoi–Hoi An–Ho Chi Minh City itinerary: finding the right pickup point, reaching the next city, checking a ticket, and contacting your accommodation. It is an editorial preparation guide, not a report of app or network testing. App features and booking conditions were checked against the official sources linked below on 20 October 2026.

Which Vietnam travel apps should you prepare first?

You do not need a long list of overlapping apps. Add your airline's official app if you have a domestic flight, and keep the booking channel your hotel actually uses. Download from the developer links on official websites or your device's app store. Do not install an unknown file sent in a booking message.

Grab: arrange a ride with the correct meeting point

Grab Vietnam's official transport page lists car, taxi and motorbike services. What is available for your location and time must be checked in the app. For airport arrivals, use the official airport ride guidance and the pickup instructions shown for your booking.

Before requesting a vehicle, confirm your terminal, the destination entrance and the vehicle size you need. A map pin placed on the other side of a road can create an avoidable meeting problem. Read the displayed fare and any stated charges before confirming. Match the booked vehicle and driver details rather than assuming anyone approaching you is your driver.

Prepare a short message with your meeting point, such as the terminal exit or hotel entrance. If the driver cannot reach your pin, clarify the location in the booking conversation. Choose a suitable car when traveling with luggage or children; an app offering a motorbike option does not make that option suitable for every traveler.

Vexere: inspect the journey, not just the destination name

Vexere's official site offers booking searches for buses, trains and other transport. Use it to compare a proposed intercity leg, then read the selected service's own details. A route name alone does not tell you where to board, what vehicle you will use, or what the cancellation rules are.

Before paying, check the date, passenger names, operator, departure and arrival points, baggage conditions and required boarding documents. Distinguish a booking confirmation from the document or procedure needed to board. Keep the confirmation email and any ticket file available offline. If the instructions are unclear, ask the booking platform or operator before departure; do not rely on a screenshot as a universal substitute for a valid ticket.

Google Maps: save the address as well as the pin

Make a small list for each overnight stop: accommodation, arrival station or airport, departure point for the next leg, and an agreed meeting point for your group. Save the address text too. Two accommodations can have similar names, and a town-center pin may be different from the entrance your driver needs.

Download an offline area where that option is available. Google Maps Help explains that offline guidance requires the route to remain inside the downloaded area; offline transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable. Keep mobile data for live directions and changes. A downloaded map is a backup, not a replacement for all online navigation.

For a pickup, compare the booking address with your saved map location before you leave the hotel. Keep a screenshot of the meeting instructions. A screenshot cannot tell you about a changed departure point, so check for messages again while you still have a connection.

Google Translate: prepare a short, reusable message

Google Translate's official offline help describes downloading supported languages on a mobile device. Check which downloads and features your version offers, download what you need over Wi-Fi, and test a short phrase without a connection. Do not assume every voice, camera or conversation feature works offline.

Useful prepared messages include “Is this the correct boarding point?”, “Please take me to this entrance,” and “I have this booking number.” Use short sentences and show the original address alongside the translation. Keep names and reference numbers unchanged. For an important ticket condition or a food allergy, ask a person to confirm the meaning; automatic translation can be ambiguous.

Use a different checklist at each stop

Hanoi: arrival address and the next departure

Save your accommodation entrance and your onward departure point as separate places. If you have an intercity ticket, confirm whether the boarding point is a station, an operator office or another listed location. Plan your local ride around that exact instruction. Do not let a broad label such as “Hanoi pickup” stand in for a full address.

Hoi An: check the airport-to-hotel connection

Vietnam Tourism's Hoi An guide identifies Da Nang as an airport access point for Hoi An. If your flight arrives in Da Nang, plan the separate transfer to your Hoi An accommodation. Save both locations and agree on the final accessible meeting point with the hotel or transfer operator. Do not treat arrival in Da Nang as arrival at your hotel.

Ho Chi Minh City: check the terminal and final entrance

On your last city stop, check the terminal stated in your current flight booking, the hotel entrance and the pickup instructions for your ride. Build time around the actual journey and airline requirements rather than a remembered transfer time. Keep an alternative contact method if your first app cannot arrange a ride.

Can a data eSIM handle account verification and payments?

Separate three things: an internet connection, a phone number, and an approved payment method. A data-only travel plan supplies the first. It does not itself supply the other two. If an app asks for a verification code, use a number and verification method that the service accepts; complete the process before leaving when possible. We have not verified universal acceptance of foreign numbers or cards for these apps.

If keeping your home SIM active for SMS, check its roaming and reception terms with your carrier. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and review automatic data switching. Our travel eSIM and primary SIM guide explains the distinction. Never share a verification code with a driver or booking contact.

Check the payment methods displayed for your account and transaction. Do not assume a local payment QR accepts your overseas bank app, or that adding a card guarantees every transaction will succeed. Prepare a backup payment method appropriate to the booking, and confirm the currency and amount before approving payment.

Prepare your Vietnam eSIM around the itinerary

Check the exact phone variant for eSIM support and carrier restrictions before purchase. Choose a plan whose coverage includes Vietnam and whose validity fits your trip. Follow its installation and activation instructions; profile installation and the start of validity can be different events. Review hotspot and any full-speed allowance separately if traveling as a group.

Use the Corelinx data calculator as a planning estimate, then compare the actual Vietnam eSIM plan details. Navigation and booking messages differ from uploading videos all afternoon. Download maps, translations and tickets on Wi-Fi to reduce what you need on the road.

Before you leave the hotel

  1. Check the current departure time and exact boarding address.
  2. Save the ticket or boarding document required by the operator.
  3. Charge your phone and keep the destination address offline.
  4. Confirm the travel eSIM is the data line and follow its roaming instructions.
  5. Agree on a meeting point if your group separates.
  6. Keep the booking support channel available if the pickup changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Vietnamese number for every app?

No single rule covers every service. Check each account's actual registration and verification requirements before departure. A data eSIM does not bypass a phone-number or identity requirement.

Can I use every app without internet?

No. Downloaded materials can help, but live ride requests, booking changes and many account actions need a connection. Keep addresses and documents offline while preserving a way to receive updates.

What if the eSIM has no data after landing?

Check the active data line, destination coverage, validity and the plan's setup instructions. Follow our No Service after landing checklist. Do not delete the profile or assume the QR can be reused without support confirmation.
